Jackie Chan is one of the legendary actors of Hollywood, popular for his dangerous stunts and physical comedy. The actor made martial arts a prominent part of mainstream cinema. He is known for doing several life-threatening stunts in his movie, which led to injuries also. However, it never deferred him from doing thrilling action scenes to entertain the audience. Among his popular stunts is one from his film Police Story.

Rush Hour star revealed the behind-the-screen story of the dangerous stunt in Police Story, which is still counted among the best stunts in Hollywood.

Stunt work is actor Jackie Chan’s expertise in the movie industry and he was initially a stuntman before he became an actor. He has done numerous films with intense and well-choreographed action scenes. He has also performed a large number of acrobatic stunts in his movies.

One of the films was Police Story in which there was a scene where Chan’s character was chasing criminals in a shopping mall. To catch them, he jumped on a pole and slides down several stories to nab them. He had to jump from a railing and hold on to the pole in mid-air. However, the tricky part was that the pole was surrounded by decorative lights that Chan broke as he slid down.

The stunt was quite dangerous, and he had to do it without any safety gear. The actor could have got a shock due to the lights, and sliding down the hot pole gave him some second-degree burns in his palms. There was no proper arrangement for his landing, only a car full of candies.

Recalling the dangerous stunt in a mall, the actor shared that he was scared. Chan shared with IGN,

“I don’t have the time to run, like, eight feet. I’m just standing there like, the round pole. No balance. I said, anytime you see, I nod my head, rolling the camera. And I go up. I go down. It’s scary. Really scary! I’m not – I’m just ordinary people, I’m not a Superman.”

The drunken Master star shared that 15 cameras were rolling for the stunt scene, hence he had to do it perfecting in one shot. He recalled when he was about to jump, there was complete silence in the mall. He added,

“The entire shopping mall is quiet. You only hear this machine. Then I– Aaahhh! I say, ’I’m gonna die.’ Yeah, I just, boom! I jump down. And I said, ‘Wow, safe landing.’”

He added,

“Because I’m so excited, the power. I don’t know where the power come from.”

The actor recalled that after performing the dangerous and exhausting stunt, he went for the shoot of his other film, Heart of Dragon, the same day. He shared he felt weak after the stunt, and couldn’t even open his car door.

Police Story was released in 1985 and grossed $18 million worldwide.
